Trafford Centre Comes To The Costa Del Sol

Book shopping trips to Spain as the company behind Manchester's Trafford Centre gets the go-ahead for a mall in Torremolinos.

Peel Holdings, the property and investment company behind Manchester's Trafford Centre, has been given the green light to open a shopping mall on the Costa del Sol.

After years of planning and negotiations, the Manchester Evening News has revealed this week, that the £500m project has been given the go-ahead.

The Trafford Centre España will be built on an 80-acre site in Torremolinos, an area which is very popular with British holidaymakers and has a high percentage of expats.

Construction should begin in early 2009, and will take around two years to complete. Trafford Centre España will follow the original closely offering retail, entertainment and leisure space, anchored by department stores and a cinema.

The development, on the Costa del Sol, will also include a five-star hotel and luxury apartments.

Peel Holdings has said the project will be aimed at everybody, not just expats and tourists, but locals as well. The development will also benefit from the new motorway extension which is right outside.

"While there will obviously be a flavour of the original Trafford Centre, the major difference is because it's in a warm climate it can be outward-facing. Bars and restaurants will have terracing and some will be built around a lake," Lindsey Ashworth of Peel Holdings commented.
