Are You a 10 Per Center?

A new report reveals that almost one in 10 British citizens live abroad. The first major study of British emigration patterns, conducted by the Institute for Public Policy Research has revealed that almost one in 10 British citizens live abroad, a total of nearly six million people, if part-time overseas workers and ex-pats are included.

Some 2,000 British citizens per week are moving abroad on a permanent basis, with a total of 107,000 people emigrating during 2005, doubling the annual figure for 2001, which stood at 53,000.

Increased immigration has masked the 40-year population drain, which has seen 67,500 more Britons leave the UK every year than have returned.

Previous governmental estimates as to the extent of British emigration were speculative, at best, putting the total figure anywhere between 4.5 and 14 million!

Unsurprisingly, Australia, Spain and the US top the poll of the most popular countries for ex-pats, but it may come as something of a shock to find that no-less-than 41 countries have a permanent British population of at least 10,000.

The top countries for Brits abroad:

  1. Australia - 1,300,000 UK residents
  2. Spain - 761,000 UK residents
  3. US - 678,000 UK residents
  4. Canada - 603,000 UK residents
  5. Ireland - 291,000 UK residents
  6. New Zealand - 215,000 UK residents
  7. South Africa - 212,000 UK residents
  8. France - 200,000 UK residents
